About this role

Identifies patients by using two patient demographic identifiers and reviews physician orders for procedures. Performs all Ultrasound procedures using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings. Analyzes sonograms, synthesizing sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.

Explains procedure to patient, introduces self, and greets patients professionally. Guides patients to appropriate areas and maintains patient and family comfort with warm blankets and extra pillows. Prepares room, obtains supplies, and maintains a sanitary, organized environment while stocking linens as needed.

Operates the PACS system appropriately, verifies studies before sending to be read, and ensures all appropriate consents are signed. Complies with departmental downtime protocols, charges procedures and supplies, and assists in maintaining an empty list of outstanding charges. Resolves scheduling conflicts and promotes intra, inter, and external communications.

Maintains ethical standards of relationships and communications, assuring relieving shift receives hand-off about patients. Stays abreast of organizational, affiliate, and departmental changes by checking email each shift. Familiarizes self with and compliantly incorporates all HIPAA mandates.

Requirements

  • Certification as diagnostic medical sonographer
  • Ability to perform ultrasound procedures with independent judgment
  • Proficiency with all ultrasound equipment in the department
  • Skill in analyzing sonograms and differentiating normal from pathological findings
  • Knowledge of PACS system operation and study verification
  • Compliance with HIPAA mandates
  • Familiarity with procedural contraindications and physician order review
  • Proficiency in maintaining imaging quality to quality control standards including all protocol requirements

  • Operate PACS system appropriately, verify studies and completeness, and ensure exams are available for radiologist review
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts, promote communications, maintain ethical standards, and ensure hand-off communication
