About this role

Under the direction of a qualified physician, performs a variety of technical procedures applying non-ionizing high frequency ultrasound waves for diagnostic purposes. Focuses on ultrasonic assessment of OB/GYN patients. Recognizes significance of structures visualized during scans.

Performs routine and specialized ultrasound studies related to Obstetrics and Gynecology. Prepares patients for examinations, explains procedures, and obtains complete patient history for documentation. Differentiates artifacts from normal or pathological processes and discusses findings with PNC physician.

Assists in sterile technique procedures such as amniocentesis, cyst aspirations, PUBS, and Chorionic Villi sampling. Contributes to keeping the laboratory orderly and clean for a safe work environment. Takes night and weekend call for one week intervals, including holidays.

Assists in instructing student interns, residents, fellows, and provides in-services on ultrasound. Reads journals, attends conventions and symposiums to share new developments. Obtains follow-up on cases and updates teaching files with scans and video tapes.

Requirements

  • Ability to recognize significance of all structures visualized during ultrasound
  • Skill in differentiating artifacts from normal or pathological processes
  • Knowledge of equipment limitations and diagnostic versus incomplete scans
  • Proficiency in making permanent recordings using digital imaging, video tapes and thermal printers
  • Experience interpreting OB/GYN pathology and discussing findings with physicians
  • Familiarity with sterile procedures for ultrasound-guided interventions like amniocentesis
  • Competence in handling and delivering samples from procedures

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized ultrasound studies related to Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Prepare patients for examinations and explain procedures prior to performing studies
  • Obtain complete patient history and document in patient’s computer file
  • Assist in sterile technique procedures such as amniocentesis, cyst aspirations, PUBS, and Chorionic Villi sampling
  • Notify attending physician and accurately report findings in cases of pathology, abnormality or clinical significance
  • Take night and weekend call for one week intervals as scheduled, including assigned holidays
  • Assist in instruction of student interns, residents and fellows rotating through the department
  • Monitor and report quality, operating condition and failures of equipment to laboratory supervisor
